Winter garden maintenance

Garden looking drab in the run up to summer? We asked an expert for tips on winter garden maintenance.

Winter garden maintenance

Add springtime flowering bulbs, such as Crocus, for splashes of colour.
Member question:
'My garden is looking a bit tired after the winter. What areas should I concentrate on now to get it looking great in time for summer?'
We asked garden maintenance and landscaping expert Thomas Bell from Plantation Gardening to answer.

How much do professional gardeners cost?

We surveyed Which? Local-recommended gardeners and landscape designers to find out typical costs for common jobs, such as building a shed, trimming a hedge or installing a pond.
It's common for gardens to be looking a little drab at this time of year while we wait for the weather to warm up.
I'm a firm believer in utilising what you have to get the best visual appearance possible without spending a fortune.
The best way to achieve this is to promote simple contrasts in colour and texture. You could:
  • Prune dormant trees and shrubs for architectural value.
  • Rake up and remove dead leaves from the lawn and borders.
  • Dig over borders around shrubs and trees to show off a nice brown soil. Also, add a mulch such as wood chip, bark or compost.
  • Apply a springtime feed to the lawn for lush green colour – a striking contrast against the brown borders.
  • Add some pots containing clusters of springtime flowering bulbs such as Narcissus or Crocus to add bright splashes of colour.
