I wish I had P.A !

On a day working in an area where there is no mobile phone signal, I must have had enough messages and emails to warrant a p.a!

Step by step photo guide to creating a rockery.

Clear and level the area.
Choose from your selection some larger rocks for height at the back.
Adding rocks one at a time to suit your design, back filling with soil as you go. This will be important for future plant growth.

Apple tree pruning after pruning.

Apple tree pruning.

I've been doing some apple tree pruning lately at various customers around East Devon. I've been pruning the trees with the following objectives in mind .

  • To balance out lopsided trees by pruning back overhanging limbs. This makes the trees look more attractive and reduces the risk of them toppling over in high winds.
  • To thin out any inward growing branches to prevent them rubbing. This can cause infections on the trees in future years. Clear out the cluttered branches from the middle of the tree to let some light and air through.
  • Prune the most recent growth from the previous year as they have a habit of multiple stem growth at the point that the tree was previously pruned. I have left one new "leader" at each point to carry on strong growth for the tree this year.
